What Happens in an MCT Session?

Discover a practical approach to ease anxiety, low mood, and overthinking - without dwelling on the past.

What to Expect from An MCT Session

Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) is a structured, practical approach focused on the present to help you step out of unhelpful thinking patterns and regain control of your mental wellbeing.
Here’s what you can expect in our sessions:
Focused Sessions: Sessions are up to 50 minutes, providing dedicated time to work on your goals. MCT is direct and practical, helping you get the most out of each meeting. We'll focus on new ways of relating to your thoughts so you can use these strategies in your daily life.
Regular Meetings (Ideally Weekly): Consistency helps build momentum and allows time to practise between sessions. This supports your progress and gives you the chance to integrate MCT techniques into your routine. The more you practise, the more natural it can become to step back from your thoughts, observe them, and choose how to respond.
Focus on the Present: We won’t delve into past traumas or childhood experiences. Instead, we’ll focus on how your current thought patterns affect your emotional well-being and how to shift them. MCT is about changing your relationship with your thoughts now, so they no longer control you.
Active Involvement and Practice: MCT isn't just talking – it involves action. You’ll practise new strategies during sessions and work on specific techniques between them to strengthen your progress. The goal is to help you build skills you can use on your own, long after therapy ends. Your active participation helps make these changes stick.
Building Skills for Independence: Therapy is often time-limited, with many people noticing significant improvements within a few months, with occasional check-ins if needed. The aim is to equip you with tools you can use independently. By the end of our work together, you should feel more able to manage your thoughts without ongoing support.
Tailored to You: Every session is personalised to your unique challenges and goals while following a clear, structured MCT framework. This ensures our work is relevant and effective for your specific difficulties and how to address them.
Practical Tools for Everyday Life: Every session will give you actionable strategies to handle challenges like anxiety, low mood, procrastination, overthinking, or perfectionism in your daily life. You’ll learn to observe your thoughts without judgment, creating space to step away from unhelpful patterns and respond to situations with more clarity and control.
No Judging Thoughts: MCT isn’t about labelling thoughts as "good" or "bad." Instead, we focus on helping you change how you relate to your thoughts so they no longer dictate your feelings. By taking a neutral stance towards your thoughts, you learn to disengage from them rather than trying to control or suppress them.
Learning to Observe Your Mind: You’ll develop skills to observe your mind without getting involved or judging, helping you notice and step away from unhelpful patterns. This self-awareness is key to changing your relationship with your thoughts, ultimately leading to greater mental clarity and peace of mind.
Based on Research: MCT is supported by extensive research and has been shown to be effective for challenges like anxiety, depression, and persistent worrying. This research backing gives confidence that the approach is both practical and scientifically sound.
A Supportive Space: While we focus on the present, your feelings and experiences are important. You’ll be supported in a safe, collaborative environment as we work towards solutions. MCT is about giving you the tools to manage your mental health without judgment or unnecessary focus on past experiences.
Metacognitive Therapy is designed to help you make progress. If you’re ready to stop struggling with your thoughts and start making meaningful changes, I encourage you to book your first session.
